How to compare the full cost of an international school

Compare tuition and additional charges using the right academic year, year group and currency. Use a practical whole-cost worksheet.

What should your school budget include?

Start with tuition for your child's offered year and academic year, then add compulsory charges and the optional services your family will use. Keep the total in the school's local currency before making an exchange-rate estimate. A directory tuition range is a starting point for admissions questions, not a final quotation.

Which fee schedule should you request?

Ask for the current written schedule and the exact year or grade offered to your child. Confirm payment dates, first-year charges, deposit conditions, withdrawal arrangements and any discount conditions. Save the document and its date so each school can be compared on the same basis.

What might sit outside tuition?

Check application and registration charges, deposits or debentures, transport, meals, uniforms, books, devices, examinations, trips, lessons, activities and language or learning support. Ask which amounts are compulsory, optional or refundable, and whether applicable tax is included. A programme in a profile is not necessarily included in tuition.

How does the directory's budget filter work?

The budget filter compares the highest published tuition band in the selected local budget currency. Schools with unverified fees or another budget currency are excluded from that filtered result. Check the school's schedule for your child's specific year-group amount; the highest band is not an individual quote.

Separately, you can display approximate fees in USD, EUR or GBP using a dated exchange-rate snapshot. Display conversion does not change budget filtering, local fee records or the amount the school will charge. If a conversion is unavailable, use the published local amount and check your bank's conversion costs.

Compare the first year with later years

Make a first-year non-refundable total that includes joining costs, and a typical later-year total using recurring costs. Keep refundable deposits separate from spending while allowing for the cash needed to pay them. Confirm each school's refund terms, and record the conditions for any discount before subtracting it.

Use a whole-cost comparison worksheet

Copy this table into your notes and complete it using each school's written schedule and admissions confirmation. Empty cells are for your own figures; no prices or refund rules are assumed. Record every amount in local currency before adding a separate optional exchange estimate.

What should you confirm before paying?

Request a written breakdown for your child's year, clarify payment and refund arrangements, and ask how future fee changes are announced. Confirm the important amounts directly with the school before accepting an offer. Keep dated evidence with your budget so an updated schedule can be checked against it.
